Q1. Why do organisms need to take food?
Answer
Organisms need to take food for their survival. Different functions of body and life processes depend on food.
Q2. Distinguish between a parasite and a saprotroph.
Answer
PARASITE
A parasite is an organism that lives on and derives its food nutrients from another living organism.
Example: Amerbel
SAPROTROPH
The organism which grows on dead and decaying matterand derives nutrients from it, is called a saprotroph.
Example: Mushrooms
Q3. How would you test the presence of starch in leaves?
Answer
We will test the presence of starch in leaves by doing an iodine test.If we remove the chlorophyll by boiling the leaves in alcohol and then put 2 drops of iodine on them, the leaves containing starch shall change their color to blue. Thus this change in color indicates the presence of starch in them.
Q4. Give a brief description of the process of synthesis of food in green plants.
Answer
Green plants prepare their food from water and carbondioxide in presence of sun light.
Q5. Show with the help of a sketch that the plants are the ultimate source of food.
Q5. Fill in the blanks:
(a) Green plants are called …………….. since they synthesize their own food.
(b) The food synthesized by plants is stored as ……………..
(c) In photosynthesis solar energy is captured by the pigment called……………..
(d) During photosynthesis, plants take in ……………and release ………………
Answer
(a) autotrophs
(b) starch
(c) chlorophyll
(d) carbondioxide , oxygen
Q7. Name the following:
(I) A parasitic plant with yellow, slender and tubular stem
(II) A plant that has both autotrophic and heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
(III) The pores through which leaves exchange gases.
Answer
(I) Amerbel
(II) Pitcher Plant
(III) Stomata
Q8. Tick the correct answer

(b) The plant which traps and feeds on insects is:
(i) Cuscuta (ii) China rose (iii) Pitcher plant (iv) Rose
Answer
(a) (ii) Parasite (b) (iii) Pitcher Plant
Q9. Match the items in Column I with those in Column II:
Column I | Column II |
Chlorophyll | Bacteria |
Nitrogen | Heterotrophs |
Amerbel | Pitcher plant |
Animals | Leaf |
Insects | Parasite |
Answer
